The eyes of the children sparkle and the hearts of railroad fans beat a little faster when narrow-gauge trains whistle and steam by. In Saxony, this can be experienced all the time. The vintage trains climb with you to the highest town in Germany, Oberwiesenthal in the Ore Mountains. They show you the romantic face of Germany’s easternmost wine-growing area with the baroque castle Moritzburg. In the north, they introduce you to Oschatz, one of Saxony’s oldest towns, and what was once the biggest European narrow-gauge station in Mügeln. Happy puffing can also be heard in the triangle where the three countries of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic meet, in the Oberlausitz (Upper Lusatia), when the steam trains reach the peaks of the Zittau Mountains. Wherever and however: all who get on board experience ‘Saxon Steam’.
