Heidenau - Glashütte -
Altenberg
...... rebuilt for the fourth time
King Albert is said to have called it the most beautiful valley in
Saxony: the wild and romantic Müglitz Valley in the foothills of the
Eastern Ore Mountains. Mining characterized the landscape once, but the
region also has a rich milling tradition. Towns like Glashütte,
Bärenstein and the well-known Altenberg were founded. Crafts and
precision engineering found their way into the valley, the most famous
example being the masterpieces of engineering from the Glashütte clock
factories. Soon the first narrow-gauge railroad reached the valley, and
as a result of increasing passenger demand, this was converted into
regular gauge in the 1930s. In December 2003 the railroad was
officially opened for the fifth time, after it had fallen victim to
flooding in August of the previous year. Now visitors can once again
enjoy a trip on the Müglitz Valley railroad every day in modern
railcars, but occasionaly also in special trains pulled by
steam engines.
